Upon leaving Tasha for the evening and returning to the hotel she fixed for us, I was greeted by members of Bhaanuh’s Guards in the glossy-smooth foyer – a grunt and, surprisingly, Captain Gaberix himself. Between the two burly, uniformed men, a sealed trolley in the same grey and blue striped fabric as their uniforms stood by the polished wooden reception.

Without offering his hand, a salute or anything, Captain Gaberix merely gave me a hint of a nod. “Mr. Walsh.”

Mirroring his behavior, I returned a tempered nod. “Captain.” My pupils pinballed between the two men a few times. “What’s up?”

“We amassed all weapons, ammo and items dropped by the skeletons you and your team killed,” he said, the complete lack of emotion in his raspy voice and steely stare gave away just how little he enjoyed being here. “Even wiped them clean from blood and dirt. As the items are rightfully yours, I wanted to deliver them myself – to show our appreciation for your effort. You did, after all, hinder a potential invasion of skeletons.”

Looking down at the sealed trolley, I arched my eyebrows a tiny bit. Wondered whether this was truly his idea or someone of higher rank. “Thanks,” I said. “Saved us a lot of time.”

“If there’s anything Bhaanuh’s Guards can help you with, let me know.”

I met the captain’s eyes. Didn’t believe for a second he meant it. He’d do it if we asked, of course, but would likely despise it. “There’s actually one little thing, maybe…”

“Which is?”

“You don’t happen to know a guy by the name of Patrio?”

Captain Gaberix and the grunt shared a glance, before the captain said: “Any last name?”

“Not that I know of.”

“In that case, can’t say I do. He lives here?”

“That’s what I’ve been told, yeah. He’s supposed to be some kind of hermit-figure who mostly keeps to himself.”

“Never heard of him, which isn’t strange, considering Bhaanuh’s current population is approximately five million citizens.”

“Even after the daemonorg attack?”

“Correct.”

I shrugged. “Oh. Well, worth a shot.”

A brief pause prior to him speaking again revealed a slight hesitation when the he said: “Once I return to my office, I can do a search in the citizenship records. If this Patrio is registered, we’ll find him.”

Captain Gaberix seemed sincere – uptight, but sincere – so I nodded. “Okay, cool. I’d appreciate that. I also know it’s a possibility he lives in the Solum District, if that helps?”

The grunt’s face contracted in a mix of emotions. Even the captain’s eyes increased a smidge in size. “Solum District,” he said in a graver voice. “That is unfortunate, Mr. Walsh.”

I nodded. “I know about the damages suffered there.”

“They were quite severe. Most of Solum is in ruins. I am sorry to say – if this Patrio you’re looking for lived there, the chance of him still being alive is rather slim.”

“I’m aware of that, but still gotta try. I’m going there tomorrow. What’s the fastest route there?”

“Mr. Walsh,” the captain said, lifting a steady hand of warning. “I would urge you to stay away from Solum at this time.
